Utagawa Hiroshige was of samurai background, was briefly a fireman, and died a buddhist monk. He was also one of the last great masters of the Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock printing tradition.
Shortly before his death, he wrote:
"I leave my brush in the East
And set forth on my journey.
I shall see the famous places in the Western Land."
If he had made it to New York City, he would have wandered the outer boroughs gazing back at the skyline. He surely would have captured the beauty, awe, loneliness and tragedy of this new urban kingdom.
